What is weight loss/management?
At Blue Water Medical, our experts can offer healthy, sustainable weight loss and management options that will allow you to maintain an ideal weight. More than 60 percent of the Canadian population is overweight or obese. With statistics rising each year, weight loss and management have become a real concern among Canadians.
How do I know if I am overweight or obese?
Patients can determine if they are overweight or obese by comparing their height with their weight to determine their BMI (body mass index). However, using the BMI calculator isn’t always accurate. The BMI calculator doesn’t take into account muscle mass, so the results can be skewed. Therefore, it is best to have your primary care physician determine if you are overweight or obese. Another way to determine if you are at an unhealthy weight is to take notice of any health issues. People suffering from being overweight or obese commonly experience other medical conditions such as: fatigue, joint pain, sleep apnea (snoring), and heartburn. If any of these symptoms concern you, it is best to seek a thorough examination from your physician.
Why is it hard to maintain weight loss?
Weight loss is harder to maintain because the body instinctively stores fat. When you lose weight, your body wants to store what fat it has or eat more. That’s why many people feel hungrier when they lose weight. When a significant amount of weight loss occurs, your metabolism decreases as well. Thus, even though you now need fewer calories to fuel your body, your metabolism is lower and fat is not burned efficiently. The combination of excessive hunger and lower metabolism is not good. Continuously losing weight and gaining it back is very unhealthy. It can cause you to gain back more weight than you initially started with. That’s why it is imperative to create a healthy weight loss plan and management program. Long-term plans yield long-term results.
How can you keep the weight off long term?
Obesity and weight gain are a medical condition. We recognize that. At Blue Water Medical, your provider takes a thorough medical and family history. From there, your doctor creates a nutrition and exercise plan that will work simultaneously with your body to level your metabolism. Sometimes medication may be prescribed. It is important to remember that each person’s weight loss and management journey is different. Not two treatments are exactly alike.
